Bioactive Honey Guide

Bioactive Honey Guide

Please be aware that we name products as per the individual brands wishes, which means that products will alternate between different measuring systems for bioactivity. Please refer to the comparison chart to determine the equivalent rating in other measures. Product specific bioactivity and information can be found in product description or in product picture gallery.

Our team does it’s best to include accurate bioactivty details on each item in the product descriptions. If you have questions regarding rating or any other information on a specific item, please email us at info@honeywholesale.com.au for specific details.

What are the different measures?

A number of measures exist to show you the medicinal strength of your honey.
This guide makes it simple for you to compare the difference (or similarity).
All measures represent the antimicrobial activity or bacteria killing “strength” of your honey. The higher the number, the higher the honeys antimicrobial activity and health benefits.

TA (Total Activity)
Levels of non peroxide antimicrobial activity in honey. Expressed as %phenol. It includes both peroxide
and non peroxide activity.

NPA (Non Peroxide Activity)
Same unit of measurement as a Total Activity test (%phenol). The NPA scale is commonly used to grade Manuka honey.

MGO (methylglyoxal)
Concentration of Methylglyoxal or MGO – the active component that gives Manuka honey its non peroxide antimicrobial properties.

UMF (Unique Manuka Factor)
Based on three separate compounds found in Manuka honey – MGO, Leptosperin and DHA. This trademark is strictly restrictions enforced.
